Basic Skills Some would call these skill sets and drills ‘Beginner,’ But everyone always needs to work on the basics. Any player who does not have a firm handle on the basics and who does not revisit them often, is a player who will not grow or improve on the ice. Basics skills are the fundamentals of all hockey, and they can always be improved upon. Just ask any pro - they return to these skills on a daily basis. We just try to have more fun doing it. Basics II The split between Basics I and Basics II is an artificially imposed one. Any developing player will have some skills which need more work at a Basics I level, while other skills are well into Basics II development. Advancing from I to II does not mean the player is finished with I, it is a cycle of refining technique and developing speed and power that will continue as long as the player wants to develop. Basics II assumes that the player has a solid grounding in form and technique, and works to build on this base. Drills shift focus from learning correct movement and form, to refining that movement - smoothing it and making it more efficient. Building speed, edgework and movement are emphasized here. Skating
