Basic Skills
Some would call these skill sets and drills ‘Beginner,’ But everyone always needs to work on the basics. Any player who does not have a firm handle on the basics and who does not revisit them often, is a player who will not grow or improve on the ice. Basics skills are the fundamentals of all hockey, and they can always be improved upon. Just ask any pro - they return to these skills on a daily basis. We just try to have more fun doing it.
Basics I
From a beginners standpoint these are the most basic building blocks of solid hockey skills; proper form and technique are learned here that are essential, and allow for continued development.
For a more experienced player, refining these most base skills will improve efficiency and proficiency throughout the players skill sets.
Skating
- Forward. Focusing on seven fundamentals of form and efficiency, and through these obtaining maximum power.
- Stops. Working towards smooth and controlled stops, in both directions.
- Starts. Quick light feet from three possible starting stances.
- Backwards. Focusing on fundamentals of form and efficiency, and though these obtaining maximum power.
- Forward Turns. Using proper edges to get quick, hard cuts.
- Forward Crossovers/Crossunders. Focusing on fundamentals of form and efficiency, and through these obtaining maximum power.
Puck work
- Control. Basic stick handling technique. Head up, smooth movement and control.
- Giving a pass. Accuracy in placement, and communication.
- Receiving a pass. Soft hands and communication.
- Wrist Shot. Form and Accuracy.
Positional
- Positions. Who, Where, When and Why.
- Basic Defensive zone responsibilities. For Forwards and Defense.
- Basic Offensive zone responsibilities. For Forwards and Defense.
